Winterstar: One Year After – 10

Nofele:

To address what appears to be your most urgent concern first: yes, you saw correctly. I am afflicted by the traveller’s plague, although I will repeat once again that it is really a curse of some kind. I understand that it will take us all some time to come up with a better name than, say, “death curse”, but it will really be better for us all if we stop spreading the notion that this is a contagion.

I also freely admit that I have been using magic to cover the most obvious signs of the curse. I am not ashamed of this. Since the curse is not transmissible, I am not endangering anyone; I seek only to avoid giving those who are skittish of me because I am a stranger even further reason to mistrust me. And yes, the accompanying implication is also correct: I am, or at least was once, from a powerful and wealthy family.

I never claimed to have the answers to all the problems plaguing Port Nyanzaru. I certainly don’t have any knowledge about how to tackle the problem of the curse. But I do know weak and ineffectual leadership when I see it. That is one problem we can address, together.

On that note: Be sure to tell all the street squads in the Market Ward to stop throwing alchemist’s fire or, even worse, banefire vials. I know they’re effective for causing chaos, but there are lines we will not cross.
